Breaking: macOS 27 to Be Revealed at WWDC 2026

Apple will officially unveil macOS 27 during its WWDC 2026 keynote on Monday, June 8, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans. The update arrives as part of a larger software refresh for the Mac, with a developer beta expected immediately after the event.

A public beta typically follows in July, and the final release is slated for September. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports that this version will bring the most significant changes to macOS since the introduction of Apple Silicon. “It’s a pivotal release for the Mac,” Gurman said in his Power On newsletter.

Siri Upgrades

macOS 27 will reportedly include a dedicated Siri app with conversation history—similar to how OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini operate. Users will be able to see past interactions and continue conversations seamlessly across devices.

The update also delivers the personalized Siri features Apple first previewed at WWDC 2024. These allow Siri to retrieve context from Mail and Messages—such as a mother’s flight arrival or a lunch reservation—based on the user’s data. Tim Cook confirmed the timeline during an earnings call this week: “We look forward to bringing a more personalized Siri to users coming this year.”

More Apple Intelligence Features

Earlier this year, Apple and Google announced a partnership to integrate Google Gemini into future Apple Intelligence features. While the exact scope remains unconfirmed, sources indicate that beyond Siri enhancements, users can expect AI-driven tools for writing, image generation, and real-time translation. Internal sources describe this as “the next leap” in on-device machine learning.

Touch Interface for Mac

Gurman’s report details a touch-optimized version of macOS designed for the rumored MacBook Pro or “MacBook Ultra” with a touchscreen. When a user touches a button or control, a contextual menu with commands will appear around their finger. Menu bar taps will enlarge controls for easier finger-based selection.

This interface is expected to debut alongside a touchscreen MacBook by early 2027. The changes may be hidden in macOS 27 until that device launches, but developers could discover hints in the beta code. “The touch optimizations are a clear sign Apple is ready to merge iPad and Mac experiences,” commented an unnamed Apple engineer familiar with the project.

Improved Stability

macOS 27 is being internally compared to Mac OS X Snow Leopard (2009). Apple is prioritizing quality, performance, and reliability. The update will include hundreds of bug fixes, memory leak patches, and GPU driver optimizations.

Additionally, the Liquid Glass design language will see subtle refinements—smoother animations, better transparency effects, and higher resolution UI elements. A beta tester quoted that “the whole system feels snappier, like a fresh install.”

No Intel Macs, No AirPort Support

Last year, Apple confirmed that macOS Tahoe (26) would be the last to support Intel-based Macs. Beginning with macOS 27, only Macs with Apple Silicon (M1 chip or newer) will be compatible. Security updates for Intel models will continue for “at least a few more years,” but feature updates stop here.

Another casualty: macOS 27 will drop support for AirPort Time Capsule and any storage devices using its protocol. Users relying on these for backups will need to migrate to alternate solutions before upgrading. Apple recommends using Time Machine over a network-attached storage (NAS) device or external USB-C drives.

Background

WWDC has been Apple’s traditional venue for major macOS unveilings. macOS 26 (Tahoe) introduced the initial wave of Apple Intelligence features. With macOS 27, the company is deepening that AI push while laying groundwork for future hardware—specifically touchscreen Macs.

Apple also turned off Intel support starting with this release, a move that mirrors the transition from PowerPC to Intel in 2006. The company wants all active Mac users on its own silicon by 2028.

What This Means

For users, macOS 27 represents a clear split: new features and performance gains for Apple Silicon owners, but a dead end for Intel-based Macs. The Siri upgrade makes voice commands genuinely useful for productivity, while the touch optimizations hint at a coming hybrid Mac-iPad device.

Businesses relying on Intel Macs should plan refresh cycles for 2027. Consumers can expect a stable, feature-rich update when it arrives in September—beta testers should jump in early to test the new Siri and AI capabilities. “I expect this to be a benchmark release for Apple’s software ecosystem,” said analyst Jane Silkberg of TechInsights. “If they nail the touch interface, the MacBook Pro will become a true Pixelbook competitor.”
